Why I need to blog more!

There was an article on Techcrunch a while back where one of the authors detailed his plans to lock down his social networks. There is too much noise! Of course like most Techcrunch articles it looked like he was just doing it for attention. Which is in some ways true. He makes more money if more people read articles he's written.

I decided to just ignore his article and move on with my life. I ignore a lot of crazy Techcrunch articles so it's not like it would be abnormal for me to ignore another one. There is a certain blogger who I ALWAYS ignore. I didn't think I would even think about that article again until He posted the follow up where he compared quitting Twitter/Social networking to Leo Laporte's post about quitting Google Buzz.

I follow Leo only Twitter, Google Buzz, Facebook and I didn't notice he wasn't posting any updates! Surely if no one noticed that he wasn't updating, that means no one ever noticed anything I posted! Why do I waste my time tweeting?

Instead I shall write this blog. It might not be the best blog out there. (The writing sucks, I'm a boring person and quite frequently I don't write blog posts as fully as I really should)

iPhone 4

With all the interesting Android handsets that have been coming out lately, I was expecting Apple to announce an exciting new version of the iPhone. This exciting new version of the iPhone would make all other cellphones looks mediocre or crappy. What Apple showed off on the 7th at WWDC was not that phone I was expecting. Perhaps my expectations were so high that it would have been impossible for anything to meet those standards.

The first new feature of the iPhone 4 is it's new display. The resolution is 960x640 This is a HUGE resolution. Unfortunately it's in the same 3.5" area as the original iPhone. All those extra pixels give the phone a much higher DPI than the 3gs (326 to be precise) Apple claims that the dpi is higher than what the human eye has. This is of course all fake marketing speak.

326 DPI is very, but do we really need such a high DPI? My Motorola Milestone has a much lower DPI and yet text on it looks perfectly fine. I can't see a single pixel. I found somewhere online that the Milestone has a DPI of 200 something. Does that 120 extra DPI really make much of a visible difference?

I think those pixels could have been put to better use for something like making the screen wider. I'm not entirely certain, but I believe the new iPhone has a aspect ratio similar to the old iPhone. It would be nicer to have more pixels.

Aside from those small problems. The iPhone 4 has a very nice display. However, it hardly makes me want to drop whatever phone I'm using right now and buy a new one.

The second major new feature of the iPhone 4 is the front facing camera. Front facing cameras are however not anything new at all. Why does anyone care?

Everything else seems like a minor incremental upgrade. I might write a little bit more about the iPhone in another post.

I always find tons of interesting links. I figured I post them.

I used to post all my links on Facebook, since that's where everyone is, but why should I give all my posts to Facebook? Why not just post all that content myself? So here we go, most links will go here.

One of my friends on Google Reader posted a link to this water bottle. I think it's pretty awesome. Hopefully I'll see it out west somewhere
I hope that one day I'll be bold enough to delete my facebook account just like Leo Laporte did live on the air.

There is a project to make an Open Source version of Facebook. It's called diaspora and it's coded in Ruby. I can't wait for it to be released.

Google TV is pretty awesome! I could go on a huge rant about why this is such an awesome Idea.

All of the readers of my blog might be asking, "What exactly is this blog for?"

Unfortunately, I had a long list prepared on a piece of paper a couple days ago. I have the list beside me and most of the ideas on it are really silly or lame. Instead of writing something really lame or awful I'll make it really simple. I started this blog because it's fun. I come across a ton of interesting links every day and I think it would be interesting to post those links for everyone else to read. In the past I've used Facebook to share links. However I've been finding that a lot of my links never show up in anyone's feed. It probably has to do with the ways that Facebook prevents spam. My links are not spam!! They're interesting. Now I will post all my links here. I can always direct people on Facebook to my blog and they can view all the links I used to post.

Sometimes I have interesting ideas or odd things I want to say. I used to just text them to random people. I came to the conclusion that I text enough random nonsequitors that I could probably fill an entire blog with that content. (Hence this blog)

The third reason for blogging is that I think it's a lot of fun. (and really isn't this the most important reason to do anything?)

What Technology I've been sleeping with lately

Everyone who knows me, knows that sometimes I like to sleep with electronic devices. Lately, I've been sleeping with this surge protector. I don't know very much about it. I haven't plugged it in. I imagine it would give me better surge protection than my existing surge protector (Which is about 16 years old)

Sadly, in order to use it. I would have to stop sleeping with it. If I stop sleeping with my surge protector, who will keep me from being lonely at night? :)

I caught two articles from the Edmonton Journal in my RSS feed reader this morning. The articles themselves are not very interesting. I find it amusing that two articles posted at exactly the same time say opposite things about presumably the same event.

The second article has more details, so I'm going to guess that it's the more accurate one. The first article was likely hastiely made with a catchy headline to grab readers. Neither article is really worth reading. Why would they be speculating about the cause of the fire before the police even got a chance to investigate it? CHECK YOUR FACTS! No more sensational bullshit. The news is trying imply that growing pot will make your house light on fire and kill you.

Ticketmaster Always makes me really angry. It's not like I'm cheap or anything, it's just that I'd prefer it if they'd tell me what exactly the price is. I don't mind paying 3 thousand dollars for a concert ticket. (If that seems like a reasonable price.) Just tell me the price up front! Don't say the ticket is only $5 and then $2995 service fees!

In this case they're complaining that the ticket price is $5 and then the Ticket Master Fees make the ticket much more expensive. A little bit sly, isn't it?

Alone in the Dark Delayed Until June | Game | Life from Wired.com

Sadness. I'm really looking forward to this game, but I realise that delays happen all the time. I'd rather the game was delayed for a very long time. If it meant that the game was very polished. The tech demo looks promising. I look forward Alone in the Dark. It looks very innovative (contrary to most EA titles) June isn't that far away anyway, and it's probably right around the time of year when I'll be looking for something to play.

Doctors never seem to be able to decide on what is and isn't healthy. The common myth that you needed to drink 8 glasses a day and the myth that Coffee is unhealthy for you have both been disproved. I hope that one day the doctors will be able to decide what is and isn't healthy.

Evangelion is really cool. Wired takes a look back at the trends the series has caused. They recently released a remake movie in japan. I can't wait to see it hit state side.

DVICE: Cup PC concept is a bit too high-tech Hi-tech coffee cup. You spill it onto the table to get your display. You pour it into another person's cup to exchange data. I want one. Too bad It's probably impossible with today's technology.

This interview with Ken Levine talks about System Shock 2 and how it was made. Apparently SS2 would have been pretty much exactly the same game without the SS licence. Atleast it wouldn't be a complete and utter rip off of about 7 other games like BioShock is.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic The Sith Lords

I can finally play it.

After the 3 year wait to play it I finally have a computer that will run it. I've had a computer capable for over 2.5 years, but it's been a bunch of really silly bugs that have been preventing me from playing the game.

The initial problem was that I did not have access to a computer capable of running KOTOR:TSL at a consistent frame rate. My computer at the time was an aging P4 with an MX440 graphics card, which wasn't really suitable for anything really. (I did manage to play half-life 2 on it, which amazed me.) So I just didn't care. KOTOR didn't exist if I couldn't play it.

Then a few months later, I got a new computer with a graphics card, processor, and the right amount of ram to run Kotor. I tried to run the game, and I got a frame rate that was even worse than what I got with my old computer. How peculiar! (I later found out that there was a bug in the NVIDIA drivers that causes this.)

So, once again, KOTOR didn't exist to me. Now, I have a new computer. It's much much faster than my old one. Strangely enough, this one wont' run the game either. I think the graphics card driver is the culprit again. Either that or Windows Vista doesn't like it very much. I think it's a bit of both. I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but I believe Auroa Engine which Powers KOTOR and KOTOR2 uses openGL. I get random corruption all over the screen. I got sad, because I wouldn't be able to play this ancient game.

Then I had thought. "Woudln't it run perfectly fine on Linux?" Since OpenGL works great in linux. So I decided to fire up WINE and see how it works. In order to install it I had to download a PlayOnLinux which is a gui for configuring and installing software in wine. I got everything installed and was about to play to experience KOTOR, until, the game crashed as soon as I started it. For some reason WINE didn't like my graphics card either.

The Solution to this problem was a lot simpler than I thought it would be. When I installed my graphics card drivers, I only installed the 64bit drivers. Wine is a 32bit program, so it could not use the 64 bit drivers. I installed the 32bit compadability drivers and WINE works perfectly now.

It's ironic when games are more compatible with WINE than Vista isn't it? (Even if the real culprit may actually be NVIDIA)

I love this video. It was orginally posted a few years ago on Google Video back before they bought out Youtube. It's hillarious when they explain emoticons. However, I remember when I first started using the internet as a little boy, the concepts of emoticons were completely foreign to me. I had to ask someone what "lol" or "" meant.

$200 seems very cheap! That's less than $10 a month. (Compared to the $40+ that most ISPs charge. I wonder if that fee is just for basic access or it's what the average user actually paid? I remember back in those days, most ISPs would charge per an hour. So you'd be paying like $10 or so a month but you'd only get a few free hours, once you went over that you were screwed and the ISP started gouging you to use their pipe.

So maybe paying over forty dollars for "unlimited" internet is cheaper. I put unlimited in quotations, because although they sell it as unlimited, there are hidden arbitrary limits and hidden throttling. Once you download or upload more than a certain amount of bits, ISPs may charge you extra or drop your service all together. Certain ISPs are starting to slow down traffic that they don't want on their network. Doesn't sound very "unlimited" to me.

Believe it or not, I'm doing more than one update in two days. Exciting?

I subscribe to about a million feeds. Quickly glance at everything. If something is interesting I bookmark it. Flock automatically uploads it to del.ico.us. I read all my bookmarks and then I write a, hopefully, interesting blog post for about 1 person to read. Quite the exciting method.

This is an intersting article. I don't really think that making people pay more money to polute is really going to help the environment. Really it makes things more expensive rather than promoting more environmentally friendly ways. I imagine it'll help to raise a lot of money so that when the government is willing to actually try and fight environmental damage .

I'm writing this blog within the blog editor built into Flock. Interesting? I can upload photos, check facebook, upload blog entries, check RSS feeds, and do all the cool stuff I did before. Now it's just a few clicks. Saves me a lot of time.

It's not like using facebook or youtube was that hard to begin with. Just type in the address. Hit enter and I'm there. I can blog just by pressing a button.

I'll see if I can use flock for longer than a week before I make my final decision.

The end of an era

My old computer has been dead for several months now. I was going to try and put some money together to buy a new one, but I thought, why not just make a new computer? So I went to Memory Express's website, and put together a computer. Initially it was only going to be a few extra parts, but then in the end I bought pretty much and entire computer minus the harddrive, monitor Keyboard/mouse, and speakers.

Assembling a computer you learn to appreciate how complex it can be. It's not impossible, but I feel that it is not something for the un-technically-savy to accomplish. Or maybe I'm just bad at it? I spent about 15 minutes trying to open the case. Every little task took hours and hours!

Finally I built the computer. Upon turning it on, I remembered that I forgot to screw the motherboard down properly, so it was really noisy. There were a few other problems, but I solved them.

I'm going to install linux on my new computer! Then I can dual boot! It'll be exciting.

Well, maybe not, but that's what some people seem to think.

I had to do a presentation today in one of my classes. I brought my laptop to show some slides in Openoffice.org impress. (I told everyone it was powerpoint so they wouldn't get so confused. It was really just reading a powerpoint file, nothing else.)

Everything was all ready and prepared. Until!!! I had to set it up! I tried hooking up the laptop to the projector and it wouldn't work. I blame the projector, because as far as I know, I did everything right. I opened up the nvidia-settings program and changed the xorg.conf settings. Then I restarted X, and for some reason it didnt' work. D the computer expert went to the fron to fix things, I told him I was running "Fedora", and he just looked at me like I had a disease and said "I don't touch that." Maybe it would have worked if I was running Ubuntu? I really doubt the distribution makes that much difference. I preffer having the up to date software that Fedora offers. Maybe I'm making a big deal about nothing?

So then the instructor asked "why isn't it working?"
Someone says "he's running fedora"
The intsructor looks puzzled. "You're not running windows?"
"Yes" I replied.
She didn't say anything more, maybe she's heard of linux?
I had a terminal open, and someone said "There's something wrong with his computer!!"

Eventually we just got a windows laptop and just used that instead.

Fedora is like this weird freaky thing on my laptop. Everyone asks me if I'm running vista when they see it. Then I do the spinny cube thing and everyone has the exact same suprised expression. Today Y almost fell out of her chair. She said it moved so fast. Are computers supposed to be slow? I don't really know.

Anyways, the presentation was only a slight bit of train wreck. Hopefully next time things work out better.

UPDATE: I got an A in that class

I've been planning on writing another blog entry for a while. I even have a little postcard next to my computer with lots of ideas! A lot of that stuff happened a while ago, but still think I can make a blog post about it. Hopefully I can produce something more than about 4 lines.

I wanted to do another blog entry linking to news articles. Unfortunatly I went a day or so without reading my blogs, so I had about a 3000 post backlog. Not exactly something I'm going to read in one sitting. It was just too impossible to make a dent, so I decided to just mark everything as read and forget about it. Hopefully nothing seriously important has happened within the last 10 days, otherwise I might have missed it.

My mom's adventures in decorating

So my mom's been using her new found Feng Shui skills to decorate her house. She put up an ugly plastic chandelier, some curtains, and those bead things that you put infront of doors.

None of the colours match.

She has native american art, Japanese decorations, Chinese decorations, and east indian inspired curtains. None of which matches with the paint.
